It is with pleasure that we offer PORTfolio Society Release number sixteen to you. This very limited collection of 2006 Vintage-Varietal Ports is the last of the wines from the Lagle family’s Lake County vineyard. It is with sadness that I report that the one acre of Portuguese grape vines were pulled out just after this harvest, but not by the choice of the Lagles. These three Vintage Ports are extraordinary wines, blended and bottled exclusively for you as a member by winemaker, Peter Ficklin. All from the 2006 harvest and the same vineyard, the three Varietal Ports offer you the opportunity to compare and contrast the differences solely on varietal makeup. Each one stands alone and unique; diverse in aroma, structure, character, complexity and distinctiveness. Only three barrels of each variety was carefully racked and hand-bottled, yielding about 800 bottles of each. These wines embody the youth and structure of young Vintage Ports and you may enjoy them now or lay them down for several decades while they continue to soften and mature.
2006 Tinta Cao Vintage Port:
The softer aspects of Tinta Cao are laid over a deeper foundation of fruit intensity, primarily because of low yields and careful management during fermentation. Aromas will continue to develop complexity and deepen, as the wine acquires the traditional flavors associated with extended bottle ageing. Ripe raspberry and coffee predominate in aroma, and the unique fragrance is reminiscent of the perfume associated with the crush of the mature and fresh grapes at harvest. (750 ml.)
2006 Touriga Vintage Port:
Aromas of ripe blackberry, plum and cherry entice and draw you in to the complexities of the Touriga fruit. Dark-berry fruit and a spicy richness completely envelop the mouth in flavor and structure. The rich and chewy finish exemplifies this grape, allowing this Vintage Port to cellar well throughout the years. Winemaker Peter Ficklin believes that the Touriga grape makes an outstanding single varietal Port. (750 ml.)
2006 Souzao Vintage Port:
The Souzao exemplifies the dark, brooding, and complex aromas and flavors in Ports. Loaded with dark-berry fruit character and hints of chocolate, coffee and menthol, the wine surrounds your palette with a heavy and full bodied texture. Additional bottle age will allow these flavors to continue to evolve; slowly building layer upon layer of subtle attributes for you to eventually enjoy. (750 ml.)
